Chris Jones Jr. is a Tampa Bay–based artist whose work is distinguished by tactile surfaces, saturated color, and a layered visual language. His broader practice engages questions of identity, self-definition, memory, resilience, and the Black experience, often using symbolism and bold graphic imagery to connect the personal with larger cultural narratives.
In this work, Jones constructs a highly stylized portrait from interlocking fields of vivid color, exaggerated features, and sharply defined contours. The face feels simultaneously fragmented and cohesive, balancing humor, tension, and vulnerability within a single expression. Floral fabric introduces a contrasting softness and familiarity, creating a dialogue between the painted figure and the patterned material beneath it. The result is playful and visually arresting, yet psychologically charged—what does the exaggeration ask us to see, to question?
